Artist Statement
My work revolves around the themes of isolation, loneliness and nostalgia, which I explore through a variety of media: drawing, etching, photography and painting. My aim is to investigate the tension that exits between reality and fiction. I am interested in capturing, specifically in my paintings, a dreamy quality that very often only exists in memories.
In a tradition dating back to the Romantics, I compose landscapes to express a personal vision. Starting from images and impressions collected during my travels, I build up paint layer after layer until eventually reality and imagination blend into each other. Enchanted or disenchanted, nature takes a dream-like dimension - in playing with the equivocal, I invite the beholder to think further into the story the image suggests.
More recently, cityscapes have allowed me to address feelings of loneliness, in essence personal, but whose echo resonates throughout modern societies. My main focus is on peripheral areas, born from the urban sprawl. In depicting these in-between zones devoid of people, I question the role of the city which does not fulfil its role of building a social community but purely fulfils a functional role.
